We envision the New East Side being a diverse community of students, young professionals, and long-time residents sharing space in a safe location. Opportunities for affordable housing, an array of both educational and dining options, plentiful green space for recreational and leisure activities, and numerous business and commercial development sites will make the New East Side attractive to residents and businesses.
East End Project
The SGACDC’s Primary Service Area is linked in many ways with surrounding neighborhoods and the greater Triad region in terms of residents, employment, and retail trade. Adjacent neighborhoods include the historic Waughtown neighborhood to the south and the Morningside Manor neighborhood to the east. To the west lies the West Winston neighborhood, characterized by its academic institutions (Salem Academy and Salem College) and the tourist draw of Old Salem.
SGACDC razed some buildings, rehabilitated others, and built new homes, resulting in 19 homes that local low-income, first-time homebuyers purchased. SGACDC also provided the buyers with mortgage education and $200,000 in down payment assistance.
